Brazil player ratings in World Cup victory over Serbia: Richarlison steals the show, Man Utd and Chelsea stars impress

Brazil got off to a winning start to the 2022 World Cup as Richarlison netted a screamer in their 2-0 win over Serbia tonight.

The South American giants have won this trophy more than any other team, but aim to end a 20-year wait to lift it again, with Tite’s side looking one of the favourites, at least on paper.

It wasn’t always easy for them tonight against a stubborn Serbian side, but Richarlison’s quality helped them through. Here are Brazil’s full player ratings…

Alisson – 6.5 – The Liverpool goalkeeper didn’t have much to do tonight but was on the ball as usual to help Brazil play from the back.

Thiago Silva-8- Rock solid, calm and experienced at the back, Thiago Silva really is still one of the very best defenders in the world, even at 38 years old. He will have tougher tests than this one, but he kept Dusan Vlahovic quiet and remains crucial for his country.

Marquinhos – 7 – Another solid defensive performance, Marquinhos did the simple things right to help Brazil take three points in their first group game.

Danielo – 6.5 – A decent performance as a right-back, but perhaps not always offering enough forward like the great Brazilian full-backs of the past.

Alex Sandro – 7 – Alex Sandro, on the other hand, was a big threat in attack and almost scored a miracle goal with a powerful blow that hit the post.

Casemiro – 8 – A great performance from the Manchester United midfielder, who ran the show in midfield and created a great chance with a sublime pass in the first half.

Luke Paqueta – 7 – Some great moments from Lucas Paqueta in Brazil’s midfield, who looks more comfortable for his national team than he often does for his club West Ham this season.

Raphinha – 6.5 – Not the most effective performance from Barcelona winger Raphinha, who will have to step up if he wants to keep his place in the squad given the big competition Brazil has in attack.

Vinicius – 7 – A lively display on the left, Vinicius might have done better with a scoring opportunity in the first half, but was otherwise a constant threat and thrilling to watch.

Neymar-6.5- Not Neymar’s most influential game, and he went off injured. We’ll have to hope that this isn’t the last we see of the Paris Saint-Germain striker at this World Cup.

Richarlison – 9 – What a performance and what a shot that second goal was! He may not have been in form for Tottenham Hotspur this season, but he turned it on for his country when they needed him tonight.

Subs: Rodrygo 6, Jesus 6, Antony 6, Martinelli 6
